The Canterbury-based Bidwell family have a background in both folk and classical music. Vince Bidwell is a foundation member of the Southern Celtic Fiddle Orchestra, in which he plays the chromatic button accordion. His wife Susan grew up singing and playing piano and is largely responsible for the introduction of both classical piano, and folk songs in her daughter Sophia's life.
Sophia began life as a pianist but switched to the accordion after moving house one too many times, and enjoys pretty much all music, with a particular fondness for Celtic tunes and musical theatre. She's currently part of the musical sandwich generation, with some weekends where her Dad and her children have more gigs than she does.
Sophia's daughter Alex began playing cello at the age of seven and enjoys celtic, pop, and classical. She is also an accomplished Irish dancer. Since beginning high school she has added bass and guitar to her skill set. She can be seen busking around Christchurch with her brother Tom, who sings and plays fiddle. Alex and Tom bring with them lots of new songs borrowed from their other life as normal teenagers. The Bidwell family will be joined by some of Tom and Alex's "folk club parents" for this concert. Expect an evening of songs, tunes and dances.
